KVBA is proud to include Blues Music Workshops as part of our
presentation at our annual Festival. This year our offerings are:
Thursday 6:00 Fruteland Jackson.
Mr. Jackson will be performing later in the evening. His presentation has been
honed through many years teaching Blues in the Schools. This is a broad overview
of the history and evolution of the blues.
Friday 6:00 Susan Harrison/ Songwriting Workshop.
Topics include key elements that help make a song go from good to great --
original unique idea, focused lyrics, memorable hooks, prosody, structure,
emotional connection and more.
Friday 7:30 Dave Allemang/ Blues Guitar Workshop.
The guitarist for local favorite "Crossroads" (performing Saturday)
teaches blues fundamentals on guitar for beginners and intermediate
players. Bring your own guitar.
Saturday 2:00 Dave Hunt/ Blues Harmonica.
Harpist for local favorites "Seventh Son" shows you how to play !
Topics include playing a single note, bending notes, 1st, 2nd, and
3rd positions, octaves, chords and more. Free harmonica for all
attendees.
Saturday 3:30 Bill Hughes and Steve Kovach/ Bass and Drums.
Seventh Son members explain why the bassist and drummer are the
unsung heroes of any band. Topics include shuffle/ double shuffle
beat, swing beat, rock beat, latin beats and how to count time.
Saturday 5:00 Dave Cleveland/ Blues Song Structure.
Keyboardist Dave and other Seventh Son members demonstrate how
common blues songs are structured. Topics include basic music theory, 12 bar
blues, the "quick four", the "turnaround", 8 bar blues, single chord songs, and
more.
